I don't know about you, but I'm so ready for spring to arrive. Earlier this week I went to the beach for a few practice shots with my new camera. I found the perfect photo opportunity watching great blue herons building their nest.
The biggest challenge was to find a good spot for photographing the action without spooking the birds, but still get close enough for a decent shot. This was also my first attempt at using my new telephoto lens, a Nikkor 70-300mm VR - click here for a detailed lens review - yay, I couldn't be happier with the results.

The Great Blue Heron
is a strikingly handsome and regal looking bird.
Â

Â
Â
Great Blue Herons live in Florida year round,
they nest in colonies,
in treetops near the water or over open water.

Â
Â
Male and female look alike,
they both work on building the nest, share the incubating duties
and take turns feeding their young.
Â

Â
Â
I think they look gorgeous no matter how you photograph them.

Â
By the way, I didn't suddenly get smart about birds,
but I picked up a great little field guide called
Birds of Florida
Â
You can tell that the author Stan Tekiela is a photographer,
because the photos are fabulous and really helpful
when you want to do a quick check as to what bird just wandered in front of your lens.Â
Â

Â
Â
There were about three heron pairs from what I could see,
but not all were building a nest.
Â
One of them was up in a tree preening. If he looks familiar it's
because I posted a photo of him/her preening
in my photo gallery here on gather.

Â
Â
It was amazing to watch all the nest building activity.
Â
I tried my luck with an occasional close up,
but those herons kept a weary eye on me, always on the move and hard to keep up with.Â

I saved the best for last ..........

I thought of you today...I was shooting pics at the beach and met another woman doing the same...turns out she only lives a block away ;) Many of us enjoy the surf but you REALLY capture it, Rose!
Wow! awesome photos! They belong on the pages of magazines!
Thanks for sharing with Gather's Best. Now featured.
Some birdies are so ugly it's hilarious and that makes them cute again:)
Thank you for posting your photo at Pretty Pictures.
You know I'm going back ...
But I have to say, that I had to chase one away from the small pond I dug by hand some years ago because he decimated the sunfish and minnows I had stocked the pond with. I hated to do it, but I put a lot of work into that pond and had to start all over again with stocking it.
Blessings and best wishes - S.
