I posted this at another site I belong to and I got a ton of interesting responses. I don't get how this can be another one of those POLAR opposite issues. It seems pretty clear cut to me. But, I'm super strict when it comes to kids and protecting them from the big bad world out there.
When I was 18 my answer would have been very different than it is today. When I was 18 I was trying to put sexy looking clothes on my baby girl to make up for the fact that I was never allowed to wear stuff like that. Over the years I came to realize just what kind of creeps there are out there. And even though they need to learn to control themselves as a Mother I should think to cover my daughter's body in a way that is not enticing to those creeps. Why add more wood to the fire when you know what it really needs is some water?
So, now tonight my boyfriend got off the phone with his niece and he said 'My niece is getting her daughter a bikini'. and I said 'That's messed up.' and his response was 'you don't get my family, we think that we should all be allowed to run around naked because that is natural for humans.' Um, okay, and his is supposed to be the Christian family. Since when did the Pagan girl be the one to come in and suggest putting clothes on while the Christians want to strip down?!?!?!?!?! I just shut my mouth about it, but then his mom was going on about how cute it was that her grand-daughter would be getting her daughter a bikini soon.
Now, if it was just her in the back yard with her mom looking on I probably wouldn't be so disturbed by this. But, her mom is dating a guy that the whole family (myself included) thinks might be a child molester by the creepy way that he acts. And there is already one in the family anyway! To me, this is just plain stupidity.
But, then maybe this is just backlash from my strict up bringing.
Would you put a bikini on your 3 year old with known creeps around?
Would you put a bikini on your 3 year old period?
