Last night I didn't sleep after talking to a four-year-old little girl. She sat down next to me at my daughter's self-defense class. She told me her age and name, and that the woman next to me was her "protector."
"What?" I asked.
She explained that her father had tried to kill her, her sister and her mother, so her mother left them. She is alone now, but the protector is taking the class to "try to protect her" against her daddy. But she assured me her daddy would kill her.
I did all I could to reassure the child that she would be safe. The story was so similar to my own adopted daughter. What can we do to make children feel safe? What a tragedy.
