Are you worried about listeria?

Read Mike Adams' (The Health Ranger)'s take on it at NaturalNews.com. He says it's pretty much impossible for cantaloupe to have listeria on it, so there must be something else contaminating it. Seems like it's another case of trying to panic the public into more draconian food legislation, which will end up benefitting the big ag interests at the expense of the smaller ones. Plus like he said, now they'll want to radiate all the melons like the California almond growers do with the almonds (in that case I guess they heat them and spray them with something). If you want good melon, you're probably better off going local, where you know the people who grow it. So lean heavily on the farmers' markets, CSAs, etc. And definitely wash everything well! There have actually been deaths associated wit the Rocky Ford Colorado Cantaloupes. It has been pretty much narrowed down one farm. They probably did something like with the lettuce a couple of years ago where some of the water used to clean up after the animals some how made its way in to the crops.

It depends on where they came from. The ones with listeria only came out of one area. I thought it was really funny today at our grocery store they had them on sale for .99 and on the sale sign it said California Cantaloupes in big letters. I am sure this was so people would know that they didn't come from Colorado. The tainted ones came from an area in Colorado called the Rocky Ford Region. I have not heard about there being any problems in any other areas other than that.

I would imagine all of the bad ones have been pulled by now. But just to be sure ask the produce manager where the crop came from just to be safe.

The lettuce was from California (I believe).

I don't really like it anyway, but I'm avoiding anything that could carry Listeria right now as I'm pregnant. They say there isn't much risk unless you have a risk (young, old, already sick, immune compromised, pregnant).

I don't worry about it....one can get sick from almost anything....

Well I don't eat cantaloupe-- have never been able to stand the taste of it. Ewwww.
I do think about the lettuce thing, when I'm eating it, because I do eat a lot of lettuce, but I'm not even close to worried enough to stop eating it.

There was a recent article about the 'worst foods' based on what could be the most contaminated and the #1 food was ground beef, and the writer went on to say he will never ever let his 3 teenage daughters eat any form of ground beef, ever, because there is a chance of them getting sick.

Now all I could imagine when I read that, is these three beautiful girls locked up in a filthy house somewhere rotting and dying to get away from this father. Because if they might get sick from eating a product that is basically everywhere, well, they might also die getting hit by a car, so God forbid they should leave the house. Plus they might slip in the shower and hit their head and die, so there is no way they should ever shower.
Plus they might get sick from the chemicals in cleaners so there is no way they can clean their house.... but now they are gonna die from all the bacteria growing in their house, because they can't leave and they can't clean it off and..... well, do you see how beyond ridiculous all this is getting?

Of course we need to be careful, clean our food good, etc. but when it gets to the point of people freaking out, well that is just stupid. The effects fo the stress worrying about what might happen are going to way outweigh the slim chance of something actually happening.

If you wash all your produce thoroughly I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Don't buy the one's that are contaminated. =) They already put out where it came from so you should be safe. Later down the road when it hits somewhere else, well then..Who knows. Only thing I know is, we never had anything like this when I was growing up. Then again we didn't have half of the population diagnosed with weird brain problems either. A trip to the wood shed would cure a lot of that. =)
