Yeah Kelly,

It is tonight. Gather is not cooperating with me when it comes to posting. I have a huge Today on Gather post that needs posted and Gather is acting crazy. GRRRR

See you in about a half an hour.

As Connie mentioned, I am giving away a free book and the winner can choose from "Flickertail & Paint, Barnyard Sleuths", "The Cold Case", or "The Car Lot". I am out of "Rudolph, a Child's Love Story" right now but all four of my books can be purchased directly from my publisher's site. They are offering them at $9.95 each for the holidays. They usually sell them at $16.95, so get them while they're still on sale. You can also purchase autographed copies of all except for Rudolph on my website. The $12.95 price there includes $3 for shipping. If you want to purchase more than one book directly from me, don't use the Paypal shopping cart. Just let me know and I'll combine shipping for you to save you a little money.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 8:32pm UTC
Mary,

I was going to announce your publishers discount in the "Did You Know?" questions that I always ask before the chats.

Did you get my email?

Good, Debbie. I hope to be able to answer all of them. :)

What a lovely opportunity. Thanks for the invitation, I'm looking forward to it. My daughter and I wrote and I illustrated a children's book and we had it copyrighted but have not (because of other busyness and responsibilities of both our lives) had it published.
My question: How did you go about having your first book published and how do you advertise its publishing to the maximum benefit?
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 2:44pm UTC
Oh my! I could write a book on both questions. Congratulations on the book! How lovely that you and your daughter worked on it together. I hope to get my daughter to coauthor a book with me. She is an amazing writer. I will try to answer your questions tonight when I have had a chance to think about how best to answer them concisely.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 8:34pm UTC
Barbara,

I hope you will be able to attend the live chat so you can get all your questions answered. It will be a great chat.
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 10:56am UTC
OK, Barbara. Here's my attempt at answering your questions in just a few words. A friend here on Gather introduced me to a publisher and I submitted my first manuscript to him. He liked it and was very encouraging, but he didn't publish it, partly because he didn't have a children's category in place yet. I decided not to wait until he did (the last I looked there still was no children's category) and I published it through Lulu.com. They help authors make it easier with self publishing. if you need more information on that, I have given two speeches on the subject of self publishing. I plan to post the information on Gather in installments because it is quite lengthy. Meanwhile, I sent the manuscript to three more publishers and signed a contact with one of them. if you don't want to go the self publishing route, I recommend you consider small independent publishing houses. They are more likely to give unknown authors a chance than the mainstream publishers.
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 11:06am UTC
Advertising and promotion is a huge subject. I haven't even begun to do what it takes to promote my books the way I should because of time and money constraints. I'd never have any more time to write any more books if I spent the neccessary time to promote them. So far 95% of all of the promotion I have done has been free and on-line. That has been time consuming enough but at least I don't have to leave the house to do it and I can get some writing done in between. I have also done a little local face to face promoting. I'm pretty reclusive so I'm not well known or particularly active in the community. That works against me. If you are, you may have better success with gaining local exposure.

Because I spent many years writing for children, I'd love to make this one. Friday's a tough day because I'm getting my SatWE column ready, but I'll certainly try to stop by.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 2:47pm UTC
I hope you can make it, Len. I would love to get your input. There's always room for improvement and I am working on several more books that can use all the improvement they can get.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 8:37pm UTC
Len,

You are just full of surprises! Did you get any of the writings for children published?

Hope to see you in about 23 minutes. Get those questions ready.
Len Maxwell Oct 7, 2011, 9:30pm UTC
Published? Um, yes, about three hundred of them. That's what I did for the first few years of my writing career.

I'll scan the other comments and see if I have a question that hasn't already been asked.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 10:12pm UTC
Wow! That's a lot of books, Len. It sounds like I should be asking you questions.
Len Maxwell Oct 7, 2011, 11:41pm UTC
Didn't mean to mislead. Only had two books published. The rest were stories/articles in magazines, newspapers, and journals.
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 11:10am UTC
I've only had about 10 articles published on-line. I think you were wise in establishing a name for yourself as an author before you had your books published.

The rudolph a childs love story looks like a sweet book.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 2:49pm UTC
Parts of it are, Shannon. I hope it will help children who feel unaccepted.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 8:39pm UTC
Shannon,

Rudolph, a child's love story is the one I was interested in as well. I can't wait to hear more about it.

Mary,

I think all children feel unaccepted at some point, they just don't all show it on the outside. They cry inside.

Always good to see you a the chats Clifford.

Writing for children should bring out a lot of parents of small children. Everyone reads to their kids. Or at least we always did when our kids were small.

See you in about 20 minutes.

I have two of the books already. I know I will get them all.. We started out playing on gather. Teaming up our animals as private eyes. Then She wrote the book and took off from there.
I am proud of Her . She has accomplished so much.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 2:57pm UTC
Those were the days, weren't they Norma? Flickertail says hi to your Paint. They haven't seen each other for awhile. I'm thinking of doing a book two starring both of them again. What do you think?
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 8:42pm UTC
Norma,

It is always great to see the authors on Gather as they accomplish their goals in writing. Mary has done well for herself and her books will help a lot of kids.
Donald M. Oct 8, 2011, 3:57pm UTC
My Dr. has been borrowing the books , he said his children really loved Rudolph and they were not really through reading it. They loved it.

Rudolph a childs love sounds very good I think I need to head over to Amazon and get me a copy.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 2:53pm UTC
Don't buy it on Amazon; it's too expensive. They were supposed to lower the price but the last I looked, it was still $16.95. Buy it from my publisher's site through the link I supplied above. They have it for $9.95
Tina Dalasinski Oct 7, 2011, 4:00pm UTC

Hello Mary and Connie,
Just in case I miss the chat I'd like to get an important question into the que:

My oldest grandchildren are just over two years old. They LOVE books!
Can you please tell me if any of your books are appropriate for their age group?

Thanks - TerryAnn
t b. Oct 7, 2011, 4:20pm UTC
Oh - and wouldn't these books make great Christmas presents!!
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 4:48pm UTC
Hi TerryAnn. I hope to see you at tonight's chat. It's been way too long since we last had a chance to talk to each other. Miss you sweetie. Am going to your page to see what I have been missing.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 10:16pm UTC
They might find Flickertail & Paint fun to listen to. The others would be a bit too old for them yet.

One question I really want to ask is how you decide and advertize the age group for your books.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 7:45pm UTC
LOL You DO ask the tough questions don't you?I'll have to think about that one.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 10:20pm UTC
I have been fortunate enough to be able to get input through various friends, some who were teachers as to what they feel are age appropriate. I still need to figure out the best places to market these books.

Did You Know?

Mary's books are on sale just in time for Christmas shopping. They are on sale for $9.95 but you have to purchase them through her publisher. Click Here to buy them before they go off sale.

Do NOT buy them at Amazon. They are much higher there.

Live chat with Marge (Mary) Russel will begin in 5 minutes.
Katryn D. Oct 7, 2011, 8:58pm UTC
besides not wanting to spend more money as a consumer...is there any benefit to the writer if bought through the publisher instead of someplace like Amazon?
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:00pm UTC
Not really, I get a royalty either way.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:00pm UTC
Hi Katryn. Good to see you here
Veronica Hosking Oct 7, 2011, 9:01pm UTC
I know our local authors like readers to buy through the local independent book stores because it keeps the money in the state and helps local people stay employed.
Katryn D. Oct 7, 2011, 9:06pm UTC
that's a good point about local authors and independent book stores Roni :)
Veronica Hosking Oct 7, 2011, 9:43pm UTC
Yes, I'd buy more through changing hands if it wasn't all the way in Tempe, because they do sponsor a lot of author chats in the area.

Mary I am interested in writing book/books to help younger children regarding child abuse and educating them how to protect themselves. Any advice you can give?
Katryn D. Oct 7, 2011, 9:01pm UTC
OOO...I know Sean would like to do something with all we have done through his battle with cancer...just not sure how/where to market that kind of book...sort of related to your question I believe Renee...
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:01pm UTC
Renee,

I can see you writing for kids. Did you read that Mary grew up in foster homes.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:02pm UTC
Katryn,

You kids could add some imput in the children's books as well. They know what the kids feel like when a parent has cancer.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:04pm UTC
Just write it, Renee. The best advice I ever hear was write, write, and keep on writing. It sounds like a book that needs to be written.
Renee (Pres of Baby James Foundation) ~. Oct 7, 2011, 9:05pm UTC
He should Katryn

Yes Connie I did see that

Thank You Marge
Katryn D. Oct 7, 2011, 9:08pm UTC
Definitely a good point Connie...our daughters could definitely help out there...and I think sharing that would help them as well...

I agree Renee, and I hope that he will pursue it...and I am certainly willing to help where/as I can...

Hi, Connie and Mary. Looks like I will be able to participate for a while here tonight.
I've wanted to ask Mary if she can share something of her experience with Publish America. I hear mixed reviews about this company.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:03pm UTC
Welcome Clifford,

It is good to see you. The gang is all here and started before party time. LOL

I had a friend publish through publish america. She was happy with the overall experience other than not being able to set the price of the book. Now she uses create space over at amazon. I'd love to hear Marge's experience over at publish america, too.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:06pm UTC
Hi Clifford. PA works for me but it might not be the best choice for everyone.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:08pm UTC
Yes, Veronica. The price setting and the release date can be problematic. I would like to have more control over both.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:08pm UTC
Welcome Veronica,

Glad you were able to make it tonight.
Pam Brittain Oct 7, 2011, 9:08pm UTC
Veronica - do you know if she was able to keep her publisher and still use Amazon's create space at the same time? I don't remember my contract with Amazon, but I know an author can set the price.
Veronica Hosking Oct 7, 2011, 9:16pm UTC
Pam - she self-published through creat space. It looks like 4 books now. She said she likes being able to set the book price and hire her own cover artist. Sandy Layne's website.
Sheila Deeth Oct 7, 2011, 9:19pm UTC
Do you have any control over the release date and the price with PA? I'm wondering how you can coordinate advertizing if you don't know when the book's coming out.
Ms Lee P. Oct 7, 2011, 9:28pm UTC
Hi Mary. I don't think I understand your answer to Cliffords request. You said PA works for you ... please elaborate a little on your answer. How come it works for you? Would you recommend it to other authors?
Pam Brittain Oct 7, 2011, 9:32pm UTC
Veronica - I didn't pose my question accurately. Did the contract with publish america expire before your friend pusblished on Amazon?
Veronica Hosking Oct 7, 2011, 9:41pm UTC
lol- okay Pam that makes more sense. I think she only contracted to publish one book through PA and the book is now out of print so her contract probably did expire. Not sure though
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:55pm UTC
Lee, I have to be careful what I say in a public forum. If you want more information about PA I would be happy to email you.
Ms Lee P. Oct 7, 2011, 10:21pm UTC
Hello again. No I was only curious. I'm not a writer but Clifford is and I noticed that he was curious.
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 11:30am UTC
Clifford, I think I can say this much without getting into trouble. I went with PA because they readily accept new authors. They don't do much in the way of distribution or promotion, unless you are willing to pay for those services. Even then, there are no guarantees of any increase in sales.

However, I knew this before I signed up with them. They work out alright for me because I was just wanted to get my first few books published. I'm hoping, with my next book, that I have established enough of a following to interest a publisher who is willing and able to work with me more on promotion without charging me for it.
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 11:32am UTC
If I can answer any other questions about PA for you, please send me a gather email.

Hi all! Mary, my question is about how to find an illustrator for a children's book. Do you have some advice?
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:04pm UTC
Welcome Debbie,

It is so good to see you. Get those questions ready. Mary is already here.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:09pm UTC
I was able to afford an illustrator so I used photos for F&P. You might also consider using art students at your local college.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:10pm UTC
Ah, that should read I wasn't able, Debbie.
Janet "Jax" B. Oct 7, 2011, 9:11pm UTC
arts students are a great idea....and they work very inexpensively. Sometime students have to do a senior project (free!) and that would get you exactly what you need.
Debbie W. Oct 7, 2011, 9:13pm UTC
Thank you for the suggestions. I will look into both of those ideas.
Debbie W. Oct 7, 2011, 9:14pm UTC
Jax, thanks for adding that info about doing a senior project for free!
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:15pm UTC
My sister in law is an artist. She drew and painted all of us a large wall painting one year for Christmas. She teaches art in an elementary school.

Often she volunteers to do drawings for organizations just for the publicity. So you may check with organizations to find an artist that just wants to get their name out there.
Janet "Jax" B. Oct 7, 2011, 9:16pm UTC
All our high school seniors are required one. One girl worked at my friend's stain glass studio for hers...and made a gorgeous bench.
Veronica Hosking Oct 7, 2011, 9:19pm UTC
Jax seniors here have to put together a senior portfolio, but only if they are taking art. It's not a mandatory course. But with how artistic my girls are...
Veronica Hosking Oct 7, 2011, 9:23pm UTC
Scott Westerfeld was at my daughter's school recently. And he said all books should be illustrated.
Debbie W. Oct 7, 2011, 9:42pm UTC
Y'all are so wonderful to answer this question so fully. I am very excited to start looking for an artist/illustrator!

Hi Mary:
I know you've done quite a few book signing events. Do you get nervous and how exciting is it?
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:04pm UTC
Welcome Pam,

Glad you were able to make it.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:11pm UTC
I was nervous but it went well. I sold 8 books at the first one and everyone was so nice.
Sheila Deeth Oct 7, 2011, 9:15pm UTC
How do you balance wanting to sell and wanting to chat at an event like that?
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:16pm UTC
Welcome Shelia,

It is good to see you tonight.
Pam Brittain Oct 7, 2011, 9:16pm UTC
Good question.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:19pm UTC
Hi Sheila. I don't know. I didn't have a problem with it. It seemed like the people who just wanted to chat showed up in between the buyers.

Would you like to write Sci Fi for YA or Adults?

Any advice for kids who want to get into writing
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:23pm UTC
As I mentioned above just keep on writing. The more you write the better you get. It also helps to join writing groups and wiorkshps. I belong to several.
Veronica Hosking Oct 7, 2011, 9:29pm UTC
For kids who want to write there is a separate write a novel in november site for young writers. There is also the alliance for young artists and writers.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:34pm UTC
Renee,

There are also programs that goes through the school system where children can write in contests. The winners get their book published. Check with your local school to see if they participate in the program.

They have a program for teachers as well. My SIL got hers published that way

Mary, I am interested in your marketing program if you have one. Do you do book tours and if so, how are they arranged?
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:25pm UTC
So far I have done almost all of my marketing on line Clifford.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:26pm UTC
If you send me a pm I would be happy to share some ideas with you but it would take way too much time to go into here right now.
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 11:54am UTC
You can download a free ebook about marketing and promoting your books by Jim Magwood. It's called “So You’ve Written A Book. Now What?”
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 12:29pm UTC
I haven't done any book tours yet but Sheila Deeth is doing a blog tour for her newly released "Flower Child". She made the arrangements herself and it looks like she is booked up most of this month. I think I will try that too. It's a great way of getting the word out without all of the time and money for traveling.

I am really interested in the book Rudolph, A Child's Love Story.

Can you tell us how you came up with the idea for it?

Now well it is selling?

What ages is it written for?
Renee (Pres of Baby James Foundation) ~. Oct 7, 2011, 9:24pm UTC
It sounds like a really good book
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:30pm UTC
I am hoping her publisher accepts paypal and has free shipping. LOL Am I asking too much?

I would love to get it for my Grandkids for Christmas.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:31pm UTC
I wrote Rudolph as catharsis but was encouraged to share it after I joined Gather. It's the first book I have sold out of. I need to figure out the right market for it. I think it's a story that needs to be shared. I think it depends on the precociousness of the child. I have sold it to parents of 8 year olds. It's one of those books that seems to be appropriate for a wide range of ages but parts of it may be a bit dark for very young children.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:33pm UTC
No free shipping. SOrry connie. I believe PA charges $4 for shipping. I don't think they take paypal but i'm not sure.

Another question--have you considered releasing your books as ebooks Marge (maybe you already have and I've not noticed)? Do you think young teens read ebooks, or will read ebooks if they don't already? And would you release them as ebooks through PA or would you need a different publisher?
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:29pm UTC
Shelia,

I was just thinking about this last nights. Most of Mary's books are for children and I just loved cuddling up with the kids and reading too them. I can't imagine reading an ebook to them. They loved to turn the pages and point to the photos.

I love my Sony e-reader but I can't imagine reading a childrens book on it.
Janet "Jax" B. Oct 7, 2011, 9:35pm UTC
Teens do use ebooks. My daughter received a Kindle for Christmas from her grandparents (though I WAS THE ONE THAT WANTED IT), and she does read books on it. Some high schools have etext books only now.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:36pm UTC
I have the same concerns about ebooks and kids, Connie. In addition, PA charges me a setup fee for ebooks and I don't feel their ebook prices are competitive.
Pam Brittain Oct 7, 2011, 9:38pm UTC
Almost all of my ebooks (which is what I stick to for lack of room) have few and mostly no pictures. But, I've enjoyed every Gather author books I've read. Not sure about small childrens books.
Sheila Deeth Oct 7, 2011, 9:38pm UTC
You're right. It wouldn't have the cuddle factor. But at 12+ kids are so computer-literate I wonder if ebooks mightn't appeal to them. There again, Amazon's going on about Vooks instead of Books--scary stuff!
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:40pm UTC
Mary,

Have you checked into Smashwords? A lot of authors use it for e-books.
Sheila Deeth Oct 7, 2011, 9:42pm UTC
My previous comment was for Connie I guess. And for you Marge, does PA keep the rights to your books forever or do they come back to you after a few years? Also, d'you think you might release some as ebooks then?
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 9:42pm UTC
It just seems to me that babies and small children are not being cuddled enough. They have seats that mother's carry them in and they are just not getting that "cuddle and touching like I feel they need to develop into caring adults.
Sheila Deeth Oct 7, 2011, 9:55pm UTC
I know what you mean Connie.
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 10:00pm UTC
I have 7 yr contrcts with PA. I guess I'll decide in 7 years what to do.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 10:20pm UTC
Mary,

Can you publish using a pen name or does that against your contract as well?
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 12:34pm UTC
Their is a clause in my contract that says I can't compete with PA. I'm not sure what that all entails.

But, pretty sure Mary's are the kind of books everyone wants - real books. Sorry Mary - if I'm wrong, please correct me.

Hi Mary. I regret to say that I have not read any of your books, but I'm always broke and can't buy many unless they are at the Half Price book store. Your books sound delightful. I love childrens books. I read books to my children when they were small and I now read books to my grandchildren. I love it as much as they do. We always do it in a "to be continued style". I have one childrens book that is no longer in print but I still read it to whomever I can get to sit still for an housr or so .... LOL. I'm hoping that I can purchase some of your books soon. My young granddaughter and I have gotten hooked on James Patterson's "Maximum Ride" series. Are your books geared to older children or younger children? I love books. Reading is much more interesting than TV. We readers need you authors, so thank you.

Marilyn,

Our Grand-kids live a 9 hour drive away. We taped ourselves reading a book to them and they loved it.

Then last year, we did the Halmark books. You read them and record them. When the child turns the page, your voice starts reading that page. It is great

Mary, is there particular software that is needed to write a children's book that has illustrations?
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 9:48pm UTC
Your publisher can take care of that unless you are planning to be self published.
Debbie W. Oct 7, 2011, 9:55pm UTC
I've heard that self-publishing is the way to go, but I really have no idea, yet.
Marge H. Oct 8, 2011, 12:46pm UTC
You can use Word for self-publishing, even with illustrations but many people feel the formatting and typesetting leaves a bit to be desired. There is a software program that many self publishers recommend but it's quite pricey. I found prices on InDesign for anywhere from $670 to $1500. Keep in mind, if you self publish, you may not sell enough books to warrant a price like that.

If you don't have children to read to, or grandchildren, there will always be little ones in your neighborhood that nobody reads to, that's great to do, too :)

Also, most (well, if ours has this, I'd say most, because our library is teeny), has two days, an hour, where volunteers read to the little ones - they love it. Our son went when he was little and I volunteered when he got older - it also gives the parents a chance to browse through the library without worrying about their little ones.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 10:11pm UTC
Marilyn,

I noticed that our library are starting to use Senior citizens as volunteers to work the library. I think there is a program called "green . .. something that pays the wages.

I hope I didnt miss this question I tried to scan through previous so I won't repeat. Did you self publish?
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 10:01pm UTC
They do talk about her publisher above. I belive it was Clifford who ask about the publisher. Scroll up and check it out. She does not self publish
Renee (Pres of Baby James Foundation) ~. Oct 7, 2011, 10:03pm UTC
Thank You Connie sorry about that
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 10:03pm UTC
I did try self publishing through lulu but PA expressed an interst in my books and I figured they'd be able to do a better job with the appearance and marketing than I could. Turns out they do very little marketing but I do like the quality of the books.

Marge,
Would you consider doing a book signing -- childrens reading group in local libraries? The books would sell and the little ones would love it!
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 10:04pm UTC
I've apprached our local library but there hasn't been any respnse from them.
Connie C. Oct 7, 2011, 10:09pm UTC
Wow! That is sad. Our local library has people reading to kids each week and a couple times a week in summer. We are a very small town too. Only one traffic light in the entire county. We don't even need it. I think they got a grant and had to use it. LOL

Please remember that Mary has donated the book to be given away tonight. You can show your gratitude to Mary by purchasing her books and asking your local library to order them for you as well.

You can always help the authors in these chats by purchasing their book or by asking your local library to get them for you. I am sure the authors will appreciate it.

Mary

There are always a few members to come to the chats late and even the next day.

Is it possible for you to check back in tomorrow to answer any new questions?
Marge H. Oct 7, 2011, 10:06pm UTC
I'd be glad to do that, Connie.
